In late 2014, my 87-year-old Aunty Ena, became terminally ill. Knowing I went to pottery lessons, she asked me to make her a ceramic urn for her ashes and then to throw them off the top of the Gillies Range. OK Ena, if that is what you want.
In the process of researching what is required I found a real lack of affordable, unique, handmade urns for ashes in Australia. It was a natural progression for me with my 30-year background in nursing and palliative care to transition into creating beautiful keepsakes and practical items for people facing the loss of a loved one, a beloved pet, or in planning for their own passing. I am finally able to do this full time, hence the birth of White Lily Urns.
The ceramic items and memorial keepsake urns displayed on this website are most of what is available today, with more being created all the time. If you would like to see more, give me a call and make an appointment to visit my homebased showroom in Atherton, far north Queensland, Australia.
I am always open to discussing your ideas and I take orders for personalised urns, and custom items like plaques and grave markers. I also make lots of succulent pots and other pottery items for fun. Balance is very important.
Each and every item is hand made by me individually. I have zero machinery to mass produce items, apart from my kilns, although I do use some vintage plaster moulds and some moulds that I have made myself that are completely original and exclusive to White Lily Urns. Having said that, I do have a couple of handy helpers. My friends Sue and Faith - both ex-nurses hang out with me in the Cloud 8 Workshop quite often. I call the workshop that because I of the obvious reference to Cloud 9 but the 8 represents the infinite number of creations that are possible with clay. I also have a Shop on Etsy called Cloud8Workshop. You are most welcome to browse there if you like the protection Etsy gives, especially if you are shopping from outside Australia.
I love clay; when most people are daydreaming about winning the lotto, I am thinking about a new glaze or texture or firing technique to try. I am passionate about my craft. I am so very blessed to have found a full-time occupation that never feels like work.
Pottery is so versatile; it can be designed to disintegrate over time back into the earth, or fired to become fused and glass-like giving it a 2000 year minimum life span. Design ideas are infinite. I am always experimenting with different glazes and techniques that will ensure that your urn remains unique and special.
