Doves as a Tribute to the Departed

Our culture loves to use doves, real birds or artificial copies, in many ways as they are always highly regarded.  In various contexts doves take on slightly differing symbology.

These beautiful gentle birds can symbolise peace and love and therefore are often thought of when planning a wedding as a gorgeous ceramic dove filled with flowers is a wonderful bridal table centrepiece. Most people view doves as a good omen.

Releasing live birds is a memorable way to celebrate the freedom of students at a graduation ceremony, whether it's a university degree or College diploma. The joy that accomplishment brings is amplified by the flapping of wings and upward trajectories as the birds set off on their new life journey.

Dove tattoo meanings can vary with individuals but people usually want to symbolise peace, harmony and love. Often though, a strong connection with a higher power for guidance and protection can be the reason a permanent inked image is sought after.

In Christianity, doves are associated with Mother Mary and her divine qualities like purity, devotion, care as well as peace. And don't forget how important doves are in the Noah's Ark story.

In the context of attending a funeral, a lovely ceramic mourning dove with perhaps a gold plaque expressing sympathy is a respectful token to give the grieving family. This tradition has faded somewhat in recent years which would make using doves for a funeral very memorable and special. The family can then choose to take the dove home for to add to a memorial alter or special place where they like to remember the departed or place on the grave or inside a mausoleum.

Whenever doves are used, these lovely birds always convey respect and strength of character  as well as gentleness and love. What a lovely way for art to speak for you when words cannot express our emotions as poignantly.
